Alcorn County Government
Alcorn County has an estimated population of 35,541. Geographically we are located in Northeast Mississippi. We benefit from the close proximity to both Tennessee and Alabama. Timber is our highest value agricultural commodity. Other important agricultural products are beef cattle, cotton, soybeans, and corn. Industry is very important to the county economy. The industrial sector employs about 25% of the workforce. The Alcorn County Board of Supervisors supports a wide variety of economic and community development activities. They individually or jointly own Magnolia Regional Health Center, the Corinth-Alcorn County Airport, the Coliseum, the Crossroads Arena, the Corinth branch of the Northeast Mississippi Incubator, the Downtown Depot and Crossroads Regional Park. The Alcorn County Courthouse and Alcorn County Chancery Building are two outstanding county facilities gracing our historic downtown.
Five supervisors are elected from single member districts for concurrent four-year terms. They meet at least monthly in the Chancery Building. Other key county elected officials include the Chancery Clerk, Circuit Clerk, Tax Assessor, Tax Collector, Sheriff, Constables, and Justice Court Judges, and County Attorney.
The Sheriff, who is elected to a four-year term, is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Alcorn County. Eleven full-time and two part-time officers, which include Chief Deputy, Jail Administrator, Criminal Investigative Officers, K-9 Officer, Juvenile Detention Officer, and Narcotics Agents, assist the Sheriff in patrolling Alcorn County.
Fire protection is provided by nine Volunteer Fire Departments that are strategically located throughout Alcorn County. Four rural water associations serve the population of the county.
City of Corinth
Corinth, which has a population of 14,938, is the county seat for Alcorn County, Mississippi.
A Mayor and Board of Aldermen, all of whom are elected, govern Corinth. The Mayor oversees the day to day operations of city government aided by the City Clerk. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen serve four-year terms and there are no term limits.
The Corinth Fire Department is a full-time department serving 30.5 square miles. The department is staffed with 52 well-trained employees working out of four stations. The department has 34 EMT's along with 16 First Responders. The fleet of trucks includes a 1986 80 ft. ladder truck, 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2003 pumper trucks. These pumpers are state-of-the-art. We also have a 1996 - 1,500 gallon tanker.
The Corinth Fire Academy Training Center is certified through the Mississippi Fire Personnel Minimum Standards and Certifications Board. All new firefighters are trained at this facility.
The Corinth Police Department proudly staffs 38 sworn, dedicated officers, including a Chief, a Deputy Chief, and four full shifts of patrolmen who operate under the command of a Captain, a Lieutenant, and a Sergeant on each shift. In addition, there are five detectives in the Investigative Division who work around the clock.
The Corinth Police Department is in its fourth year of sponsorship of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program. A sworn, uniformed officer teaches the program to local 5th graders. The near future holds many progressive changes for the Police Department that will ensure that we have the latest technology in Law Enforcement. |
