Corinth schools and students continue to be recognized on the local, state, and national levels. All schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and recognized as Level 5 Superior Performing Schools by the Mississippi Department of Education. In addition, all schools have met the adequate yearly progress requirements of the No Child Left Behind legislation. Five schools in the district serve approximately 1800 students. Schools are structured in an effort to allow students to attend school in age appropriate environments. West Corinth Elementary School serves students in grades K-1. Students in grades 2-4 are served at East Corinth Elementary School, and students in grades 5-6 attend South Corinth Elementary School. Corinth Junior High School houses grades 7-8 and the Corinth High School Academic and Performing Arts Center serves students in grades 9-12. East Corinth Elementary School and South Corinth Elementary School have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as Distinguished Title I Schools. Corinth High School has been recognized by Redbook magazine as one of the top 100 high schools in the United States. The schools offer numerous enrichment, remediation, special education, and extracurricular activities. Extended day and extended school year programs are also available for students. Higher Education Northeast Mississippi Community College provides its students an educational experience in a university-like atmosphere at one third the cost of tuition at a four-year school. For over 3,300 students per year Northeast offers university parallel courses taught by faculty committed to more personalized attention in classrooms occupied with half the students than those on a university campus. As a result, Northeast alumni can boast of a much higher success rate at the university level than those students that begin their post-secondary educational career at a four-year institution. For those students planning to enter the workforce following graduation, Northeast offers a wide variety of career and technical programs from automotive service to radiologic technology that equip students with the advanced skills needed to succeed in today's highly competitive job market. Always going ahead of the pack and exploring new frontiers, Northeast brought Mississippi its first facility designed to house only health occupations programs for a community/junior college, and was the first school in Mississippi to institute an associate degree nursing program. Northeast was also only the second institution in the nation to develop a country-western music curriculum. Outside the classroom over 30 clubs and organizations, intramural sports, a fitness center and eight varsity sports are available to the student body. At the varsity level the "Tigers" are consistent contenders for championships on the state, regional and national level in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, golf, women's softball, and men's and women's tennis. Athletic support groups such as the famous Tiger Marching Band, traditionally one of the largest collegiate bands in the state, a 13-member co-ed cheerleading squad and Pom squad are always among Mississippi's best. And for after class and when the game is over, five dormitories (three female, two male) house 824 beds for the resident student. Rooms are carpeted, air conditioned and wired with free cable TV, local phone service and Internet. A full service cafeteria, deli sandwich shop, pizza parlor and short order grill provide the students adequate choices at mealtime. Through concerts, lectures and sporting events, Northeast brings many entertainment and cultural events to the northeast Mississippi area each year. Founded in 1948, Northeast, one of the youngest community/junior colleges in Mississippi, has emerged from modest beginnings to a place at the forefront of education, not just in Mississippi, but in the nation. Northeast at Corinth At the February 2005 meeting of the Northeast Board of Trustees, members approved a plan to precede with Phase I of the Northeast at Corinth Center. Approximately 30,000 square feet will be developed in this first phase of construction. According to President Johnny Allen, the board has set in motion a plan to open the Northeast at Corinth off-campus site in 2006. The facility will be in a vacant industrial building on Harper Road in the Alcorn County Industrial park. The City of Corinth donated the 75,000 square foot building valued at $1 million for the project. |
