Agribusiness
Alcorn County is very diverse in its agricultural enterprises ranging from small agribusiness operations to large row crop operations and timber. Our number one agricultural commodity is timber followed by corn and soybeans respectively. Alcorn County currently boasts a commercial peach orchard operations where consumers can pick their own peaches if so desired. We also have a blueberry growing operation that functions at the same level. We have a tremendous farmers' market where people come from all around surrounding counties and states to purchase home-grown vegetables.
Cash receipts for the 2006 fiscal year in the area of commercial row crops are as follows.
Soybeans - $2.7 million
Corn - $4 million
Cotton - $300,000.00
Cattle and Calves - $1.8 million
Misc. Crops - $3.4 million
Timber - $5.0 million
We also have active agricultural associations such as the Alcorn County Cattlemen's Association and the Alcorn County Forestry Association.
The Alliance is actively involved with the agricultural component of the county by supporting the Annual Alliance Ag/Forestry Tour that showcases various agricultural operations in the county. The Alliance also participates in the Annual Wildlife Tasting Supper which this year surpassed its attendance record by hosting over 700 people. The Alliance also offers 4 Agricultural Scholarships per year to graduating seniors that will be enrolled in college in an agricultural related field.
